We often speak of the moral obligation to care for children and youth in the US foster care system in the best way possible. Treating this most vulnerable population well is just “the right thing to do”. Now, thanks to The Annie E. Casey Foundation, we also have clear proof that it is in the nation’s economic best interest as well. If we can get youth aging out of our foster care system to achieve the same outcomes as the general population in several measures–education, early parenthood, incarceration, and homelessness–the US can save $4.1B per year.
This is an issue that we can, and should, get behind.
